What is the ISO 14001
Environmental Management System?
For organisations that are taking positive steps towards being more environmentally friendly, an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System is a formulaic way of setting and meeting the standards required through a number of different documents and clauses.
It demonstrates that you are using best practices within the workforce to ensure that you are compliant with the requirements, are taking sustainable actions, overcoming any issues with the framework and identifying improvements for the future. It’s therefore recommended that internal and external audits are regularly carried out in order to obtain ISO 14001 certification.
Why ISO 14001 audits are important
Increased risk management control over environmental factors
Improves emissions whilst reducing waste and other bi-products
Helps gain competitive advantage in applying for tenders
Improves CSR
What does an ISO 14001 audit include?
Whether an ISO 14001 internal audit or external audit is taking place, it’s designed to meet objectives and showcase continual improvement. A simple ‘plan, do, check, act’ principle is helpful when achieving your aims and is supported by audits and reviews.
Internal Audits
Carried out by your internal team, these checks ensure that your actions within the workplace are aligned with what is documented within your Environmental Management System.
It’s important to compare what is currently being done and what should be done as documented within the ISO 14001 audit requirements in order for you to better current standards for the future.
Although the responsibility of a dedicated individual within the business, it should still be a formal, impartial and objective exercise to get a true picture. It’s essential for observations to be recorded in an official fashion so that they can be reviewed at management meetings between once and four times a year.
External Audits
External audits are to be carried out annually by an independent company such as ISO QSL with a dedicated auditor who can check that your Environmental Management System documents are being followed correctly.
They’ll be able to determine if they are being achieved to a high standard and administer a certification which will need to be checked each year with a fresh new audit to ensure that there is consistency or further improvements. This demonstrates that your documents are kept up to date and that the organisation is benefitting from the good work detailed in the ISO 14001 standard.
