The client
Stewart Clague Services (SCS) is the largest and longest-serving building services and facilities management provider on the Isle of Man. It specialises in all aspects of design and installation for mechanical, electrical and building works, including air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing, heating, solar panels, project management and specialist building works.
Established in 1969, the company has continually adapted to an ever-changing and expanding market while maintaining a personal service to its vast, loyal customer base.
SCS prides itself on providing a quality installation or service within budget and on time, delivered by an in-house team of project engineers and tradespeople who are qualified to the highest industry standards.
The project
Paul Wood, SCS’s QHSE Director, spotted an opportunity to bid for a substantial construction tender that could significantly expand the business. The tender represented exactly the kind of project SCS wanted to win. It was complex, prestigious and perfectly suited to its capabilities.
However, the client issuing the tender had strict requirements. It wanted evidence of robust quality, environmental, health and safety and information security management systems.
Without the right certifications, SCS wouldn’t even make it past the pre-qualification stage. Paul knew their ISO certifications would be crucial. He needed to demonstrate not just that SCS held these standards, but that it actively maintained and improved its management systems.
The solution
ISO QSL have supported SCS for more than ten years, helping it build a comprehensive suite of ISO certifications. It started with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in 2011, before adding ISO 45001 in 2012, and ISO 27001 in 2013. But having the certificates wasn’t enough. Our auditors, Kieran Ryan and Rick Allard, ensured Paul’s team stayed ahead of the compliance requirements through regular support visits and recertification audits. They helped SCS demonstrate genuine commitment to the management systems, providing evidence of continuous improvement. When the tender opportunity arose, SCS had everything in place to confidently showcase its credentials.
The impact
SCS won the tender, with its comprehensive ISO certifications proving decisive in the selection process. The tendering client was particularly impressed that it held all four major standards and could demonstrate active engagement with its management systems.
The tender win has opened new opportunities in similar markets where multiple ISO certifications are becoming a standard requirement.
