Which ISO standard is most important for your industry?

You’ve decided that ISO certification could help your organisation.

But which standard should you choose?

Your industry provides a useful starting point. Below, we consider construction, manufacturing, engineering, data centres and IT, financial services and fintech, professional services, healthcare and care, and supply chain, transport and logistics.

However, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Your priorities depend on your risks, objectives and customer or tender requirements. Some regulated sectors also need specialist standards, so treat these recommendations as starting points. Get in touch with our team for tailored recommendations.

Are you prepared for ISO 14001:2026?

We’re here to help you review your current environmental management system, identify likely transition priorities and prepare for ISO 14001:2026.

Jodie Turner – Marketing Team Leader

During my time as ISO QSL, I’ve developed extensive knowledge of digital marketing alongside a strong understanding of the ISO standards that help organisations improve.

Construction

Most important ISO standard: ISO 45001

Construction involves changing site conditions, multiple trades, subcontractors and equipment. ISO 45001 helps you identify hazards, assess risks and protect employees, subcontractors and visitors. This makes it the likely first priority where people work at height, operate machinery or move between sites. However, a customer or tender may require ISO 9001 first.

Important additions

  • ISO 9001 helps you control workmanship, documentation and project delivery.
  • ISO 14001 covers waste, emissions, noise and resource use.
  • ISO 27001 helps you protect drawings and project information.
  • ISO 22301 helps you prepare for disruption that could delay your projects.

Manufacturing

Most important ISO standard: ISO 9001

Manufacturing depends on repeatable processes and consistent output. ISO 9001 helps you control customer requirements, suppliers, materials, production, inspection and nonconforming products. It also gives you a process for investigating defects and preventing them from recurring.

Your products and customers may determine whether you need a specialist quality standard instead. Automotive, aerospace, food and medical device supply chains have their own requirements.

Important additions

  • ISO 45001 addresses risks involving machinery, workplace transport, chemicals and manual handling.
  • ISO 14001 helps you manage waste, emissions and resources.
  • ISO 27001 helps you protect specifications and technical data.
  • ISO 22301 helps you prepare for equipment failures, supplier disruption and other production stoppages.

Engineering

Most important ISO standard: ISO 9001

Your clients rely on your designs, components and completed projects to meet their requirements. ISO 9001 helps you control specifications, design and development, technical documents, verification and project delivery.

It also demonstrates that you follow a consistent engineering process rather than relying on the knowledge of individual employees. This makes it a useful starting point whether you provide consulting services, manufacture products or combine both activities.

Important additions

  • ISO 45001 is important if your employees work in workshops or on customer sites.
  • ISO 27001 helps you protect CAD files, intellectual property and confidential designs.
  • ISO 14001 supports environmental management.
  • ISO 22301 helps you maintain delivery during operational disruption.

Data centres and IT

Most important ISO standard: ISO 27001

Your customers entrust you with systems and information that they may need around the clock. ISO 27001 helps you protect that information by managing risks involving people, physical security, processes and technology.

It provides a framework for controlling access, managing incidents and protecting customer data. Certification can also help you demonstrate your information security practices to prospective customers.

Important additions

  • ISO 22301 helps you prepare for outages and restore critical services within planned timescales.
  • ISO 9001 supports consistent service delivery.
  • ISO 14001 helps you manage environmental impacts.
  • ISO 50001 helps data centres manage energy use and performance.
  • ISO 42001 becomes relevant if you develop or use AI systems.

Financial services and fintech

Most important ISO standard: ISO 27001

Financial services and fintech businesses handle sensitive financial, transactional and personal information. ISO 27001 helps you identify these information assets, assess threats and select controls that reflect the risks.

It addresses information held across your systems, workforce, suppliers and physical locations. Certification may also help you respond to security questionnaires and demonstrate your controls to customers, investors and financial partners.

Important additions

  • ISO 22301 helps you maintain services during cyberattacks, system failures and supplier outages.
  • ISO 9001 supports service delivery, customer support and controlled growth.
  • If you use AI for fraud detection, credit decisions or other important processes, ISO 42001 helps you establish governance, oversight and accountability.

Professional services

Most important ISO standard: ISO 9001

Accountants, solicitors, consultants and other professional services firms depend on consistent service delivery. ISO 9001 helps you control how you accept work, identify client requirements, assign responsibilities, review deliverables and respond to feedback.

It can reduce your reliance on informal knowledge and help your employees follow the same core processes. However, ISO 27001 may take priority if a client or contract requires information security certification.

Important additions

  • ISO 27001 helps you protect confidential client, employee and financial information.
  • ISO 22301 supports service continuity during IT failures and other disruption.
  • ISO 42001 becomes relevant when you use AI for analysis, document preparation or decision support.
  • ISO 14001 may help you meet environmental tender requirements.

Healthcare and care

Most important ISO standard: ISO 7101 (healthcare) or ISO 9001 (care)

ISO 7101 was developed for healthcare organisations. It helps you improve care quality, patient safety and operational performance while keeping patients at the centre of your management system.

ISO 9001 may provide a better starting point for many care providers, including care homes. It helps you control processes, define responsibilities, review incidents and complaints and improve services across teams or locations. Your regulatory, contractual and commissioning requirements should guide your choice.

Important additions

  • ISO 45001 helps you manage risks affecting employees, contractors, patients, residents and visitors.
  • ISO 27001 supports the protection of health and personal information.
  • ISO 22301 helps you maintain essential services during disruption.
  • Medical device organisations may need ISO 13485.
  • Medical laboratories may require ISO 15189.

Supply chain, transport and logistics

Most important ISO standard: ISO 9001

Your customers depend on you to move, store or coordinate goods without damage, loss or delay. ISO 9001 helps you control order handling, inventory, suppliers, deliveries and customer complaints across warehouses, depots and transport teams.

It also helps you investigate missed deliveries, damaged goods and other nonconformities so you can address their causes. However, supply-chain security may take priority if you handle sensitive or high-value goods.

Important additions

  • ISO 45001 covers risks involving vehicles, loading equipment, warehouses and manual handling.
  • ISO 14001 addresses fuel, emissions, packaging and waste.
  • ISO 22301 supports continuity during transport and supplier disruption.
  • ISO 27001 helps you protect shipping and customer data.
  • ISO 28000 may suit organisations with significant supply-chain security risks.

What if you need more than one ISO standard?

You don’t necessarily need to choose one standard and ignore the rest. Management systems for quality, information security, environmental performance, health and safety and business continuity often overlap.

Many ISO management system standards follow a shared framework, known as the Harmonised Structure, which allows you to combine shared requirements rather than duplicating every management process. You’ll still need to address the requirements that are specific to each standard.

For example, a manufacturer may need ISO 9001 to control production, ISO 45001 to manage workplace risks and ISO 14001 to address environmental impacts. An IT provider may combine ISO 27001 with ISO 22301 and ISO 9001.

Find the ISO standard your business needs

The most important ISO standard isn’t always the most familiar one or the one most businesses in your sector choose. It’s the standard that addresses your risks, supports your objectives and meets the requirements of the customers you want to work with.

At ISO QSL, we start by understanding your organisation, why you’re considering certification and what you already have in place. We’ll help you identify the standard or combination of standards you need, whether you work in one of the industries above or a sector we haven’t covered.
