As a business owner, director or manager, you’ve likely heard of ISO certification.
But what exactly is it, and how can it benefit your organisation?
ISO certification is a way to demonstrate that your company meets the high standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This independent, non-governmental body develops and publishes global standards that cover various aspects of business.
Achieving ISO certification shows your customers, partners and stakeholders that you’re committed to delivering products or services that consistently meet their requirements and expectations. You also prove that you have robust systems and processes in place to manage risks, drive continuous improvement and ensure the sustainability of your operations.
In this article, we’ll demystify ISO certification and explore the ways it can help your business grow, improve and thrive. We’ll take a closer look at the different types of ISO certifications available, the specific benefits they can bring to your business and the process of achieving and maintaining certification. We’ll also discuss how to choose the right ISO certification provider to support you on your journey towards excellence.
So, whether you’re just starting to explore ISO certification, are considering it for your business or already have it and need to renew or go for further certifications, read on to discover how this powerful tool can help you unlock your organisation’s full potential.
What is ISO certification?
ISO certification is a formal recognition that your business meets the standards set by the International Organization for Standardization. ISO is an independent, non-governmental organisation that brings together experts from around the world to develop voluntary, consensus-based standards. Its goal is to promote innovation, quality and sustainability across industries and borders.
Its standards cover a wide range of business-critical functions, from quality management and environmental sustainability to information security and occupational health and safety.
To achieve ISO certification, you must demonstrate that your business has implemented and maintains a management system that complies with the requirements of the specific ISO standard you’re pursuing. This involves documenting your processes, training your employees and regularly reviewing and improving your systems.
Following ISO standards shows that you’re adopting best practices and proven methodologies that have been carefully developed and vetted by leading experts. It helps you improve your own operations but also gives your customers and stakeholders peace of mind, knowing that you’re committed to excellence.
Types of ISO certifications
ISO has published more than 25,000 standards covering a wide array of industries, from manufacturing and healthcare to accounting and ICT. Some of the most popular include:
ISO 9001 – Quality Management Systems
Perhaps the best-known and most widely adopted ISO standard, ISO 9001 focuses on helping you consistently deliver products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. Implementing a quality management system based on ISO 9001 will help improve customer satisfaction, streamline your processes and reduce errors and waste.
ISO 14001 – Environmental Management Systems
If you’re looking to demonstrate your commitment to environmental sustainability, ISO 14001 is the standard to help you achieve it. It helps you to identify and manage your environmental impacts, from energy use and waste generation to water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Achieving ISO 14001 certification can help your organisation reduce its environmental footprint, improve its reputation and attract more eco-conscious customers.
ISO 27001 – Information Security Management Systems
Protecting sensitive information is essential in the global digital economy. ISO 27001 provides a framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an information security management system. Following this standard will help your business safeguard its critical data, reduce the risk of costly breaches and build trust in your brand.
ISO 45001 – Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems
Ensuring employee health and safety is a legal and moral obligation. It’s also key factor in your organisation’s success and sustainability. ISO 45001 helps you create a safe and healthy work environment by identifying and controlling risks, promoting employee participation and creating a culture of continuous improvement.
Benefits of ISO certification for your business
So, what’s in it for you? Why should you invest time and resources in achieving ISO certification? ISO certification can bring a wide range of benefits to your business, no matter your size, sector or location.
First and foremost, ISO certification can help you improve your operational efficiency. Documenting and standardising your processes can help to reduce variability, eliminate errors and identify opportunities for improvement. This saves you time and money while helping you deliver more consistent, high-quality products and services to your customers.
Speaking of customers, ISO certification can also help you enhance their satisfaction and loyalty. Demonstrating your commitment to quality, environmental sustainability or information security shows your customers that you value their needs and expectations. This can translate into increased trust, repeat business and positive word-of-mouth referrals.
ISO certification can also help you increase your market access and competitiveness. Many industries and sectors require or prefer suppliers to be ISO-certified, especially in international trade. Achieving certification can open new opportunities and allow you to differentiate yourself from competitors who haven’t made the same investment.
ISO certification can also help you manage risk. Identifying and assessing potential risks to your business, such as quality issues, environmental incidents, or information security breaches, can help in developing plans to mitigate or eliminate them. This helps protect your business and gives your stakeholders confidence in your ability to navigate challenges and opportunities.
Finally, ISO certification is a powerful way to demonstrate your commitment to quality, safety and the environment. Achieving and maintaining certification shows your employees, customers, partners and community that you hold yourself to the highest standards and are dedicated to continuous improvement.
Streamlining your processes and identifying areas for improvement can help eliminate inefficiencies, reduce defects and rework, and optimise resource use. Again, this can save you money, reduce waste and minimise your environmental impact. It can enhance your reputation, helping you attract and retain talent and create a culture of excellence throughout your organisation.
The ISO certification process
The ISO certification process can be daunting. But with expert guidance and support, it can be a smooth and rewarding journey.
Choosing the correct ISO standard for your business is the first step. As we discussed earlier, there are many different standards available, each focusing on a specific area of management. Consider your business goals, customer requirements and industry regulations to determine which standard(s) are most relevant and valuable for you.
Once you’ve selected your standard(s), the next step is to implement the management system. This involves documenting your processes, procedures and policies, training your employees and ensuring that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities. You might also need to invest in new tools, technologies or infrastructure to support your management system.
You don’t have to do this alone. At ISO Quality Services Ltd (ISO QSL), we can support you through the entire implementation and certification process, from helping you choose the right ISO standard for your needs to gaining compliance and providing ongoing support throughout the lifetime of your certificate. We also provide expert advice, practical support and guidance on what you need to do to achieve compliance with your chosen ISO standard.
As you implement your management system, conducting regular internal audits and management reviews is essential. These activities help you monitor your progress, identify areas for improvement and ensure that your system is effective and efficient. They also prepare you for the next step: the certification audit. Again, we can support you with this.
An external certification body, such as ISO QSL, will conduct your certification audit. A trained auditor will visit your site and assess your management system against the requirements of the ISO standard. They’ll review your documentation, observe your processes and may interview your employees to determine whether you meet the criteria for certification.
If you pass the certification audit, congratulations. You’ll receive your ISO certificate and can start promoting your achievement to your customers, partners and stakeholders. However, the journey doesn’t end there. To maintain your certification, you must continue to improve your management system, conduct regular internal audits and management reviews, and undergo annual surveillance audits by your certification body.
Following these steps and partnering with a reputable ISO certification body will help you achieve and maintain ISO certification and enjoy the many benefits it brings to your business.
Maintaining your ISO certification
Achieving ISO certification isn’t a one-time event. To ensure that your management system remains effective and continues to deliver value to your business, you’ll need to maintain your ISO certification.
If you’ve gone down the accredited certification route, which we explain in the next section. You’ll need to undergo surveillance audits annually. Your certification provider conducts these audits to verify that your management system still meets the requirements of the ISO standard and that you’re continuously improving your processes. Surveillance audits are typically less extensive than the initial certification audit, but they still require preparation and attention to detail.
Every three years, you’ll need to go through a recertification audit. This audit is more comprehensive than the surveillance audits. It aims to confirm that your management system remains compliant with the ISO standard and that you’ve demonstrated continuous improvement over the certification cycle. Successful completion of the recertification audit will result in the renewal of your ISO certificate for another three years.
The non-accredited route (again, see the next section) is a bit more straightforward. Our certificates last 12 months. We carry out a re-certification audit each year and provide a support visit in between to help you with any areas you may be struggling with. We also provide guidance throughout the year to help you maintain your certification and ensure you use your management system effectively to unlock its full benefits.
Choosing the right ISO certification provider
When it comes to achieving ISO certification, choosing the right certification provider is crucial. You want a partner that understands your business, has the expertise and experience to guide you through the process and is committed to your success.
Choosing an accredited or non-accredited certification provider is a crucial factor to consider.
Accredited providers – those approved by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service(UKAS) – are regularly assessed to ensure they meet strict standards of competence, impartiality and integrity. They can offer a high level of assurance and recognition, but they may also be more expensive and less flexible than non-accredited providers.
Non-accredited providers, such as ISO QSL, are not bound by the same rules and can offer a more personalised, hands-on approach to certification. While non-accredited providers can certify to the same level as accredited providers, they can also provide value-added services, such as training, consulting and ongoing support, to help you achieve certification and improve your business performance. However, it’s essential to choose a reputable and experienced provider who can demonstrate their own commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
Other factors to consider when choosing a certification provider include:
- Industry experience: Look for a provider who has worked with businesses like yours and understands your specific needs and challenges.
- Customer service: Choose a provider that’s responsive, supportive, easy to work with and will be there for you throughout your certification journey.
- Value for money: Consider the total cost of certification, including fees, travel expenses and any additional services, and look for a provider that offers a fair and transparent pricing structure.
- Reputation: Check the provider’s references, testimonials and online reviews to get a sense of their track record and customer satisfaction.
