If your business is certified to ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management and/or ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management, changes are on the horizon. Both standards are under review by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), with the new versions now scheduled for release in 2026.Â
These updates will bring improvements to quality and environmental management systems, helping businesses stay aligned with emerging challenges such as digital transformation, sustainability and risk resilience.Â
What’s the timeline?
The updates were originally expected at the end of 2025, but the ISO has pushed the release dates to 2026:
- ISO 14001:2026 Environmental Management: this standard is the furthest along in the process and is expected to be published in the first quarter of 2026 (January to March).
- ISO 9001:2026 Quality Management: this standard is scheduled for release in September 2026.Â
You’ll have three years to transition once they’re published, but starting early is the best way to avoid risks like loss of certification, which could affect your business operations.   Â
How will the Standards change?
The exact details won’t be confirmed until publication, but ISO 9001:2026 is expected to have more significant changes than ISO 14001:2026.Â
We’ve already shared some predictions in our previous article on anticipated changes, which highlight updates around risk-based thinking, sustainability and supply chain management.   Â
What should you do now?
A 2029 deadline might feel a long way off, but laying the groundwork now puts you in a stronger position. Here’s why it matters, and what you can start doing now:
High demand for consultancy and audit dates
When ISO 27001 was updated in 2022, audit slots filled up fast, especially as the deadline approached. This was for a standard with far fewer certifications than ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. With more businesses requiring to transition, the pressure on consultants and auditors will be greater. Starting early gives you more choice, support and less stress. Â
What you can do now:Â set internal reminders for key dates and stay subscribed to updates so you’re ready as soon as the standards are published.Â
Early preparation reduces stress later
Early preparation means you can train your team, update your documentation, and adjust your systems gradually, not in a last-minute panic. Â
What you can do now: start reviewing your current systems, assign a transition lead, and log where updates are likely needed, especially around risk, sustainability and training. Â
Missing the deadline will affect your certification
A missed transition deadline will impact your certification and potentially your business operations.
What you can do now: build awareness internally. Share expected timelines, assign responsibilities, and make sure leadership understands the need for timely action when the standards are published. Â
