Embracing an eco-friendly future: practical steps for businesses

The urgency to protect our planet has never been more apparent. Every day, the news highlights the devastating impact that our actions have on the environment. As businesses, we must take responsibility and reduce our environmental footprint. But where do we begin? Here are some actionable ideas to kick-start your eco-friendly journey:

Embracing digital documentation

Printing not only drains your budget but also generates substantial waste. Reduce paper waste by transitioning to digital documentation and processes. Use cloud storage and collaboration tools like Google Docs and Asana to store and share files electronically. This will eliminate the need for excessive printing and physical storage.

Transport

Did you know that transportation contributes significantly to your environmental impact, even if you don’t have a fleet of vehicles?

If your business involves product delivery or transportation services, consider using electric or hybrid vehicles in your fleet. You could also collaborate with eco-friendly shipping and logistic providers who prioritise sustainable practices.

For employees, encourage remote working and virtual meetings whenever possible. Where commuting is required, encourage your team to walk or bike to work, promoting a healthier lifestyle while reducing carbon emissions. You could also foster a car-share scheme by connecting employees based on their locations. Whatever the mode, reward employees who choose “green” transport methods.

Energy

Small changes in energy usage can have a profound and lasting impact. When upgrading office equipment like computers, printers, and refrigerators, opt for energy-efficient models with power-saving features.

LED lights are also highly energy-efficient, have a longer lifespan, and produce less heat. Additionally, install motion sensors or automated lighting controls to ensure lights are only activated when needed.

Educate and engage employees

Foster a culture of sustainability by organising workshops, seminars, or training sessions on eco-friendly practices. Encourage employees to share ideas and initiatives for reducing environmental impact and recognise their contributions through rewards or incentives.

Implement green building practices

If you have control over your workplace, consider implementing green building practices. This may involve using energy-efficient materials, optimising insulation, installing renewable energy systems (like solar panels), and incorporating natural lighting and ventilation.

Look at your supply chain

Prioritise suppliers who are committed to eco-friendly practices, such as using sustainable materials, reducing packaging waste, or having green certifications like ISO 14001.

If you need support with this, we can put you in touch with JDP Procurement who offer sustainable services and supply chain consulting throughout the UK.

Implementing ISO 14001 is an excellent way for businesses to formalise their environmental management practices and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. You can get a free, no-obligation quote here.  Alternatively, call the team on 0330 058 5551.
