New statistics from the EEF suggest that 56% of small businesses in the UK have failed to increase their cyber security investment in the past two years.
It was also reported that a fifth of businesses also do not adequately inform their employees as to the risks and effects of cyber-attacks.
This is linked to findings that only 56% believed that their board see security as a serious priority.
74% of small businesses reported breaches in the last year. Cyber-attacks can come in various forms including viruses, spyware and malware and the average breach can cost a small business £311,000.
For larger businesses this average figure rises to £3.14m. New figures from Government research also suggest that in the past year, two-thirds of big UK businesses have been hit by a form of cyber-attack.
These results were released with the Cyber Governance Health Check, which was created by the government after the ransom of data at TalkTalk in October 2015.
The government plan to launch a dedicated National Cyber Security Centre this year and have announced they will spend £1.9m over the next five years.
So what can we do to reduce the risks?
This July we are relaunching our Information Security training with new intermediate and advanced courses. For more information please contact us or for course content and dates visit our training website.

This year our Operations Director, Jennifer Appleton is taking to the dance floor as a contestant in Strictly Worcestershire 3.
She is partnering with Handelsbanken’s Chris Orr, and together the couple will be dancing to raise money for two wonderful charities.
Strictly Worcestershire is a black-tie charity dinner and dance competition featuring local business professionals. Each couple will perform two, two minute ballroom category dances. These will be judged by a special guest panel of judges as well as the audience.
The contest, now in its third year, is sponsored by H1 Healthcare, a recruitment, training and healthcare provider.
Jennifer, who takes part in many local charity initiatives, wanted to show her support for the charities Strictly Worcestershire supports; Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer and the Worcestershire Breast Cancer Unit.
The Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign is a registered charity with the aim of raising £1.8million. This money is to fund the establishment of a new, dedicated Breast Unit at Worcester Royal Hospital for use by women and men across Worcestershire for all breast related issues.
Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer was established in 2000 by Veronica Kumeta and the late Sue Macmaster, after their friend Carol Knaggs was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The charity works alongside the Queen Elizabeth Birmingham.
Around 500 women and 100 men in Worcestershire are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. UK survival rates lag significantly behind most of Europe. Progress is dependent on funding for continued research and new methods, equipment and facilities.
To show your support for these two fantastic charities please visit the ‘Team Sharon’ Just Giving Page to make a donation.
You can follow Jen & Chris in the run up to the big night on Twitter @JennifORR and on Facebook.

What is your role in the office?
My role in the office is to provide comprehensive accounts administration and company financial analysis (it’s nearly as exciting as it sounds!)
What is your favourite thing about working at ISO Quality Services?
My favourite thing about being here is working alongside some lovely people. It’s good to feel part of a team and that you are making a valuable contribution.
Why did you choose this profession?
To be honest, I didn’t actually choose this profession. After I left college at 18, I applied for a few various roles within different organisations including banking, town planning and retail. I chose to accept a junior accounts position at the head-office of a national DIY retailer as I hadn’t yet passed my driving test and could get a lift easier to there! As it happened, I enjoyed the challenge of the work and have never looked back.
Tell us something in the office nobody knows about you
I have a very mixed ancestry, having descended from Cheyanne Indians from North America from one side of the family and Irish royalty on the other, I never know which box to tick when asked for my ethnic origin!
If you could bring one musician back from the dead, who would it be and why?
If I could bring back one musician from the dead, it would probably be Johnny Cash, his music just got better as he got older and still stands the test of time.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Driving blind-folded around an obstacle course as part of a team building exercise, scary but fun!
