NEW INTERNATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY STANDARD FURTHER DELAYED

The ISO 45001, the new international standard for health and safety management has been further delayed until 2018, and could now be as late as next June.

The new standard, which will replace the BS OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management standard, has been significantly delayed once again. The new international standard aims to bring health and safety more in line with the recently updated ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 mainframe.

A committee of health and safety professionals, from 70 countries, are involved in the development of the standard, and will help to provide safer working conditions and support employee well-being.

When released the new standard will seek to:

  • Reduce the risks to personnel and additional relevant parties.
  • Create a focus of continual improvement to constantly seek to improve health and safety standards in the workplace.
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out, along with a company’s health and safety policy are in line with an internationally recognised standard.
  • Context of Organisation– Will look at the internal and external factors of a business, addressing the risks and examining how to control them.
  • Leadership– Will identify the means of communication on different levels, not just at management level.
  • Documented information– Will take in to account all documentation and records.

ISO Quality Services Ltd will endeavour to be pro-active and keep you updated with the release of ISO 45001. If you are an existing customer, our client services team will be in touch to prepare you for the changes.

HOW CAN ISO CERTIFICATION HELP A SMALL BUSINESS?

It is a common thought that ISO certification is meant for large corporate businesses, but don’t be misled by this. In fact, ISO certification can be just as beneficial for small businesses as it is for large, and the standards are designed to help all different sized businesses. After all, 99% of all businesses in the private sector are small businesses!

Take ISO 9001 as an example. The Quality Management standard is a solid first standard that many companies opt for. The clue is in the name of the standard, it is designed to support your company in delivering a quality service and satisfying your customers. An obvious target for any sized company.

So what are the benefits?

Improving Tender Success

Been beat to a contract because your competitor is certified? Many organisations no longer accept bids from companies that do not hold ISO certification. By being able to show that you run an ISO system, you are more likely to be considered for a contract as you are showing that you are a professional company with a commitment to providing a quality service, no matter what your company size is. This will help you gain the edge over any competitors and level the playing field with larger companies.

Increased Business Efficiency

When you are a small business, being efficient with your resources can be an effective way of reducing wasted time, money and effort. Running an ISO system can help you to manage your use of resource so that you can identify aspects where savings can be made and action on them. This will help your small business as it allows you to re-allocate your resources to aspects that need it more, keeping your company running smoothly.
