A Nuneaton storage and distribution firm has been fined after a worker was killed when a tall stack of empty wooden pallets toppled on to him. The gentleman who lived in Harold Street, Nuneaton, was working at the company in Nuneaton when the incident happened on 9 November 2010.
Warwick Crown Court was on 11 April that the gentleman and his colleagues were gathering up fallen pallets from a tall stack that had collapsed in the yard on that wet and windy morning. As the man in question and other workers removed the wooden pallets, another tall stack toppled over. Others jumped clear the gentleman was struck by the pallets, which weighed 36kg each, and died after sustaining multiple injuries.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that a lack of effective management control over operations in the pallet yard, combined with high stock levels, had led to an unsafe environment and stacks being made too tall. The company based in Nuneaton, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The company was fined £75,000 and ordered to pay costs of £25,316.
Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector Roger Amery said:
“This death was a tragedy which could have been prevented if this company had given proper and thoughtful attention to its pallet yard operation. Its failure to do so put other workers at risk and led to the death of the man in question.
Lots of firms form unsupported or free-standing stacks in their yards. I hope this death and the penalty imposed prompts them to check the condition and height of their stacks so that this doesn’t happen again.”
Free guidance on health and safety is available at www.hse.gov.uk. For effective Health & Safety Management Control why not think about the BS OHSAS 18001:2007 Health & Safety Management Standard?
It has been announced that the ISO 9001:2008 will be updated in 2015. This will make integration with other ISO standards much easier. Stay tuned and we will keep you posted on more news when it becomes available.
It has been announced that the ISO 14001:2004 will be updated in 2015. Jennifer and Catherine from ISO Quality Services Ltd attended an environmental seminar on Thursday 30th May. This made them aware of the changes that were going to be made to the standard, the implementation and best practice of the standard. Please see https://www.isoqsltd.com/iso-140012004-environmental-management-standard-proposed-updates/ for more information.
Tuesday 14th May was our annual Fundraising day!
We had a Onesie wearing, cake eating day, where ISO QSL members of staff raised money for Little Hearts Matter. Little Hearts Matter offers support and information, and raises awareness of those affected when a child has only half a heart, due to conditions such as Complex Pulmonary Atresia, Tricuspid Atresia, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) or Double Inlet or Outlet Ventricle (Univentricular Heart).
Little Hearts Matter was originally set up in 1994 at the request of parents of children who had a life threatening diagnosis of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. There are approximately 200 children diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome each year, but there are a further 400 diagnosed with other single ventricle conditions.
More Information on the charity, how to donate or to apply for a fund-raising pack can be found at http://www.lhm.org.uk/. Our annual fundraising day for Little Hearts Matter started with all the staff donning onesies for the day!
We also had a visit from Tracy, who runs her own business called Naturally Exuberant, and she gave us a seminar on ‘food’: in particular the 12 Habit Club, 80/20 Rule, Brain Chemicals, the foods we eat and how they can affect us. With a little help from ‘the Shield’, ‘Batman’ & ‘The Joker’ we learnt what hormones within the body are good fat burners/fat stores.
Tracy’s presentation was incredibly interesting, and really makes you think if you change just little things in your diet, what a difference it can make to you and the way you feel. Tracy is definitely passionate about her work and that really shows! If you are looking to do an internal staff meeting focused on the well-being of your employees – then contact Tracy for an informative, fun & vibrant experience http://www.the12habits.co.uk/
Lunchtime meant cake time… 9 cakes to be judged, scored and eaten with a winner announced. We paid £3 to enter our cakes into the competition, where the cakes were scored out of 10 on appearance, taste and morishness. The cakes were:
Scores were counted, and announced as:
In total £90.00 was raised for Little Hearts Matter – we raised enough for 9 antenatal pack to recently diagnosed parents, at a time they are completely devastated, terrified and confused. The pack allows them to understand what the condition is and hear from other parents about their experiences, giving them the information to make an informed decision.
What fund raising day are you planning to hold?
All employers will have to provide workers with a workplace pension scheme by law over the next few years. The biggest employers have already implemented this back in October 2012.
If you don’t already offer workers a workplace pension scheme, you must set one up before your business’ staging date. For a list of staging dates please see http://www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk/employers/staging-date-timeline.aspx#s4566
As the employer, you must enrol into the scheme all employees who:
You must make an employer’s contribution to the pension scheme for those workers.
