There is great motivation for completing my apprenticeship

My name is Mike and I wanted to tell you about my current journey as an apprentice.  I began my apprenticeship with ISO Quality Services Ltd, in November 2012, as a Junior Accounts Assistant, having previously worked in a retail environment at a DIY store, this was a complete change for me.

During the first year of my apprenticeship I studied for my AAT Level 3, attending Worcester College of Technology one day a week on day release. This was when I completed my greatest personal achievement of my apprenticeship, which was completing and passing AAT Level 3 in just 6 months, having taught myself and using knowledge previously gained to take all of my remaining exams at once. Now into the my second year at the company I have moved onto being the companies finance assistant as well as studying for AAT Level 4 which I am on course to pass by the end of the year.

Since my apprenticeship began I have developed numerous skills both within my role in accounts as well as working within an office environment. I have been able to apply the knowledge I have gained at college such as VAT treatment and Sales Ledger to my daily work, which has allowed me to improve myself and the company. Also working as part of a smaller team has allowed me to communicate with everyone bridging the gap between departments and personally gaining a better understanding of the company as a whole.

My apprenticeship has even potentially altered my future plans, originally looking to end up at a large multi-national accounting firm, however having now worked in a smaller family run company, I have realised there is a lot to gain working this way and aiding the growth of the company as it evolves or expands can be very rewarding on a personal level, perhaps more so than working as a number in a larger company. This has also allowed me to see what I am looking to get out of a job in terms of enjoyment and satisfaction.

There is great motivation for completing my apprenticeship as ultimately I am looking to gain a qualification at the end of it but, knowing that all of my hard work in the office as well as at college is providing me with the skills to do this, and not just a way of earning money, is a fantastic way of learning.
