ISO 45001 – The new Health and Safety Management Standard revision

19 Jan, 2015

The BS OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management Standard has been one of ISO Quality Services Ltd.’s most popular standards ever since its formation.

However it will be replaced with the new and internationally recognised ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System that will now be published in late 2017.

What’s new?

With the revisions of the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management and ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Standards in mind, the new ISO 45001 will be aligned with these so as to ensure that they work seamlessly together and complement each other.

Even though the BS OHSAS 18001 is a British Standard, there are businesses in over a hundred countries that have adopted the standard.

The reason for which being that it is widely acknowledged as being very important within the workplace. Composed in conjunction with the International Labour Council, the ISO 45001 will seek to protect workers all around the world.

The new standard will focus on the following aspects:

  • Reduce the risks to personnel and additional relevant parties.
  • Create a focus of continual improvement so as to constantly seek to improve health and safety standards in the workplace.
  • Ensuring that all activities are carried out, along with a company’s health and safety policy are in line with an internationally recognised standard.

What if my business already holds the BS OHSAS 18001?

All businesses already holding the British Standard will have to in time make the necessary improvements/adjustments to as to comply with the new standard. However, with the standard being released in the next year and there being a 3 year grace period, there is no need to panic.

Furthermore, ISO Quality Services will contact all clients holding the standard in plenty of time so as to help them through the transition process.

I am interested in the Health and Safety Standard, what should I do?

With the revision nearly a year away and the ISO allowing businesses plenty of time to transition to the new standard, there is no reason why your business should not implement the BS OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management Standard.

Furthermore the revision will take many aspects from its predecessor and so there will only be adjustments that will be required.
